#120 An Early Spring Day...

and it is only the 25th of March. The temp is somewhere around 80, the Southern breeze is quite brisk at times, the birds are singing. Maryann decided that we need to get the gardens ready for the season. So we got to work.

Yesterday we went to the Home and Garden Show in Kansas City and got all kinds of ideas. When we returned home we were greeted by the sight you see here.

Ralph and the guys came by and gave the lawn its first mowing of the season. We were quite surprised and that spurred us on to do the yard and garden things we had already planned.

The forsythia don't look too good this year. We think the cold weather got to them and froze most of the potential blossoms. The leaf buds are forming well. This may be the last year for the forsythia. As for the Buddha garden, we took a lot of the dead leaves out of it. It looks fantastic

As you can see, someone has to do the hard work. Plants seem to thrive more when the are fed. We took out a lot of dead leaves, live grape hyacinth and weeds as well.

Maryann thought this small group of grape hyacinth would be OK. However, as we all know only too well, they do spread out throughout the garden. I even took some out of the yard next to the garden plot.

Rabbits can wreak havoc in any garden. We have decided that this is the only bunny that is welcome. The others are bunny-rabbitus non gratis. There was one occasion last year when the neighbors were walking there dog near this garden plot while a rabbit was munching on some bleeding hearts. Charlie liked the exercise. I can't vouch for the rabbits perspective. It didn't stay around long enough to even register a complaint.

There were lots of stray grape hyacinths in this garden and clover too. We think we worked about five hours getting everything done. There is just something about doing a job like this that brings a sense of joy and accomplishment. I have never claimed to be a gardener and a professional once told me I would never make a farmer. I was not crushed by that pronouncement. Maryann still doesn't buy it and finds ways for me to practice gardening skills.

Later this year when the plants begin to bloom I will post some more photos. Now I think it is time to finish my beer and get to the shower.

80 degrees already, WOWSER!

It was only high 50's here today so we haven't done any yard work yet, been too cold and wet. Can't wait for it to warm up so I can go to Wojo's (our garden center) and get Chokeberry 'Brilliant Red' and Spiraea Goldmound for south side of house.

Was just saying to hubby yesterday that our yard mowing guys will probably be here for the first time by the end of April relative to the weather, of course.

Your place looks great; good job!

Imagine those little grape hyacinth being a pest. I do envy you them however as I would love to grow some here,it is too hot (sub tropical). My mother used to grow them in her lovely garden in Victoria.
Cheers Margaret

sorry i've been a bit distant lately. not my intent.

your yard looks positively heavenly. you and yer gal are very lucky. ours is a bloody mess, with weeds attacking from all sides and such.

we could use some assistance from bunnies or my gawds, something!

enjoy that weather too. feel free to send some of it my way.

and hey, update on mr puddins:

It’s 11:25pm on a Sunday night.

We just got back from yet another emergency trip to the clinic with Mr Puddins. He’s not recovering as well as he should from the surgery 2 Friday’s ago.

He’s running a 105 temperature, is distant, dehydrated and vomiting nasty things.

Vet is optimistic and recommended some things to look for over the next few days. We opted to agree and allow them to.

Smart or not, we want Chasey healthy and home.

So, like i told dear shannykinds, i really dunno how to pray... so if you could, send along your prayers to him for us, Okay?

thanks jack..

We've already had our cooler on. As for growing things, not going to happen. The dogs like to dig things up.

Dad, you're supposed to contribute at the new forum as well.

Love you.

~sigh~
your yards are beautiful and your home, the perfect castle.
I once came home to a neighbor's gift of mowing our lawns, as it did me, I bet that made your day and gave you some oomph to start the spring sprucing. :)

Let me formally thank you Jack, for all of your support throughout these last few months.

It has meant so much more than a surprise lawn angels gift :)

I am grateful for you.
