#740 Has it been that amount of time?

It was just 43 years ago that Maryann and I got married. The wedding was wonderful. The reception dinner was the same. The fact that we were going to leave that same night to return to Fort Gordon, GA from Saegersville, PA was going to add some challenges to the day.

Challenge one, make sure the car is packed and the list of all of those who presented gifts is accurate and up to date. Maryann would be ready to prepare thank you cards upon our arrival at our home in Augusta, GA.

Challenge two, we drive out of the driveway at her parent's house around 10:30 PM and I notice that there isn't much gas in the tank. No problem. I stop at the first gas station that is still open. The guy working the station is reluctant to serve us because he has already taken the readings from the tanks. Fortunately, I had worked in a gas station as a teenager and told him that he could just add it to the next day's account. I also told him we had just gotten married and were headed to our motel. The fact that I was still in my dress blue uniform, might have been an influence, too.

Challenge three, I had made reservations at a motel just off the interstate in Delaware. I had never been on that route before and GPS devices weren't even a thought for anyone yet. By the time we got to the are of the motel we were really tired. We could see the motel, but we couldn't see the road to get to it. We aren't sure whether we drove across a field or found the road. It was around 1:30 AM by the time we got there and were able to get to bed.

This year, thanks to some very dear friends, we were able to celebrate at Pierpont's Restaurant in the Union Station in Kansas City, MO. We had a wonderful meal. The executive chef went to high school with our youngest daughter. Patrick always comes out to say hello whenever we dine in his fine establishment. I heartily recommend that you try it when you get the opportunity.

Challenge four, going back to bed now and trying to get back to sleep. Too much wine kept me restless most of the night. but it was worth to celebrate our relationship.

Thanks, Maryann. I love you dearly and couldn't get by as well as I do because you are with me.

Shannon, it was part of that time. It wasn't the drive back to Georgia because we had her car. It was when we went to El Paso and took my car that she had to drive a stick. She did pretty well as I remember.

Thanks, Sandee. You do know how to carry a tune,
