#620 A Wake Up Call For Us All

Yesterday the film we ordered arrived in the mail. We look forward to receiving two films each week. We have seen some really great films.

Once I looked at the title and read the description we had a discussion about who had ordered it. After watching it, I am glad we ordered it. I recommend it to you all.

The movie: I.O.U.S.A

The description:

With the country's debt growing out of control, Americans by and large are unaware of the looming financial crisis. This documentary examines several of the ways America can get its economy back on the right track. In addition to looking at the federal deficit and trade deficit, the film also closely explores the challenges of funding national entitlement programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

There is a 30 minute version you can watch on line.

Frankly, folks, it is scary. We all need to realize that we need to put more of our money into savings and stop buying stuff we don't need with money we don't have. We also have to make it plain to our elected officials they need to do the same thing. If they don't get the message, then we need to replace them.

I highly recommend the film to all. Once you have seen it, you will understand why I recommend you let your elected officials know that they should be viewing it and heeding the message.

This is one way we all can...

Serve with integrity, care about those we serve and share the love in our heart/souls.

You know what, it is said that this film was funded by a conservative billionaire with only one objective - to scare people about all social programs.

Now, I don't know if that is true or not. But from my limited knowledge, I do know that Americans today have a "perceived" higher spending power not by one single factor. And really, social programs aren't that bad.

Anyway, one factor, which I believe, started in the 70s, when the Govt decided to subsided corn farmers (bringing down the price of corns, thus span the cattle industry, high fructose corn syrup industry etc), things started to change. With the heavy subsidy, suddenly the grocery bills of an AVERAGE household with plenty of red meat cost less than 30% of their take-home pay. This gave people the "perceived" value that they eat well, and are rich, afford to buy other stuff with the leftover money.

Of course, little did people realize that this pattern alone has helped to create a nation of unhealthy food (today cows in America don't eat grass, but are fed corns and injected hormones and antibiotics, since cows cannot digest corns naturally without being sick), thereby having unhealthy people who rightly or wrongly, truly believe that they can afford to live better than others because food is so cheap and getting cheaper.

But that is just one factor alone. There are many factors in the IOU... too many to be listed here.

Sounds like Australia, Jack. Our credit card debt per head is massive, even for those of us who do not use credit cards...and we're in the minority. People need to stop putting things on tick and to save up and pay cash, including the politicians.

Had a conversation with someone yesterday about this subject. People need to get the idea out of their head we live in a disposable society with no consequences.

Of course big business encourages this. For instance, if you pay your credit cards off every month, which we do, then you're known as a *dead beat*. What kind of message is this sending to our youth!?!

Thank goodness Prez O is in there now... can't imagine what things would be like if he wasn't.

I've been in favor of voting all the bums out the past three election cycles. I stand vindicated, though what will it cost us for that vindication?

very true post and Jack, why don't you also post something about that subject on our "good to know"-blog?
I know many people would be interested in that!

Re your fourth-of-July-post: very good of you to remind us of the background and what one is doing to keep your rights in excistance!

Mind you I also just wrote about "civil courage" on the godd to know-blog:

It's true isn't it, rights have to be earned, you can't take anything for granted, can't expect anything for free without paying at least your respect to those who did the job for you and putting in your own exchange! like your point of view!
