#148 As Seen Through the Windshield #1

Today began very early. The clock showed 4:35 AM and Mother Nature called. Before I could get back to bed Maryann was up and watering the plants prior to our departure. So it was time to make the bed, get ready for the day, make sandwiches for the trip, pack the last few things and hit the road.

While driving North out of town I realized I had not filled the tank. Fortunately there was a station on the road where the gas was still just below $3.00/gal. That is probably the last time I will see that price until we get back, if then.

These next few photos show the effects of two days of torrential rains. You can barely see the watery fields in these three photos.

There was a sign telling us that a section of I-29 was closed due to flooding. Sure enough we had to be rerouted. Fortunately, it did not delay us much at all.

This sign was displayed at a rest area along I-80 in Nebraska. There was a sign next to it that indicated that the Purple Heart was designed by George Washington. I had read that somewhere else.

We drove west from Lincoln, NB and the weather got sunnier.

The Great Platte River Rock Archway Monument. There are a number of relics on display at this site. We chose not to stop and visit due to our schedule. Maybe next time.

And they say that Kansas is flat. Nebraska is just as flat, maybe flatter.

The Pine Bluff, WY rest area has some beautiful scenery. This is some of the only hills in the area.

In a few minutes further West of this site we arrived in Cheyenne for the night. With a little luck and good prior planning they have a wireless internet connection. I will be able to keep you informed of our travels. Thanks to Peter for this idea. He made some similar postings on a recent trip. You might want to check them out.

Hi Jack, you can sure change locations quick in the US, it takes at least a day to get from one state to the next one here, WA is the biggie, nearly 1/3rd of Oz but VERY sparsely populated, lots of desert country.
Keep on Truckin'

Nice to see your part of the world, Jack, as I have shown you mine (ohhhsnigger..hehehe).
James A Michner's book of "Centennial" talks a lot about the Platte river so your reference brought back that info to e.

Wish we had so much water lying around here in Oz Jack. Could do with it westward of here.
Glad you have another Aussie to keep you informed. He lives way up north so there are now two perspectives you can get.

Keep safe in your travels.

(BTW your roads are fabulous...we wish we could have something similar here...ahh me)

Love the pics, Jack!

Makes one feel we're right there in the van with you and Maryann... in spirit, that is.

Have a safe journey.

Can't wait for your arrival here! I've already begun the ritual of the "PRE PARENT CLEANING" today. I'll change the sheets on Friday so that you and Mom have a wonderful place to collapse when you arrive. Oh, and I'll have some Mexican Corn and Bean soup waiting too! I'm sure we'll chat, but call when you are getting close!
